Update from your Golf Course Superintendent:
The hot and dry summer forecast for our area is already here, with things getting very dry on the golf course. It looks like it will be quite different from the last two years, when we were battling too much rain and moisture on our greens. But we can always hand water and irrigate when needed. It is very hard, next to impossible to remove too much water that gets dumped on us. It is always better to be on the dry side with bentgrass greens than on the lush and moist side.
Our new fans are up and operational, which brings up a question I get asked a lot: “When will you turn on the fans?” --- Basically, we will start them up when the air temperature is hot, and we have high humidity, with very little air movement or breeze. Usually, conditions are ripe for fan usage in mid-June onward; but this year, we have had some hot days, but with some breezes and low humidity. Consequently, we haven’t had to use them very often yet. Fan use seldom will be required at open-air sites or on sunny days with low humidity. But very shortly, they will be on 24/7.
By the way, the reason for using fans is to increase air movement across the green; and the survival of bentgrass has been shown to improve at sites with the increased air movement provided by fans. The positive effects of fans drying out the soil and increasing the evapotranspiration rate are the two major benefits influencing the bentgrass. Fans offer little cooling benefit to the turf grass, which is contrary to most popular opinion. Also, this is when we will appreciate all the tree and brush removal, and the limbing work that was done earlier this year. Brush and tree removal + larger fans = increased air circulation!
Enjoy the summer on the golf course!
